JMD Instruments was born from a lifelong curiosity about sound, craftsmanship, and the relationship between material and vibration.
Today, each instrument is handcrafted in Valencia, Spain, combining traditional craftsmanship with a precise, acoustically informed approach. Production remains deliberately limited, allowing each instrument the time and attention it deserves.

Everything you need to know about our gongs, from materials and tuning to care, shipping, and choosing the right instrument.
We primarily work with stainless steel, using a carefully selected alloy chosen after extensive testing of different grades of stainless steel. For those seeking something different, we also accept custom requests in titanium and nickel silver.
Tuning stability is central to our work. Each instrument undergoes multiple rounds of tuning and heat treatment to help stabilize the steel and refine its sound. We pay particular attention to the relationship between the fundamental and its harmonics, aiming for a coherent, balanced response in most of our instruments.
Absolutely. Every player has a different relationship with sound. Get in touch to discuss your preferred pitch, harmonic character, or other requirements, and we'll explore the possibilities together.
We recommend choosing high-quality mallets suited to your playing style and the character of your gong. One of our favorite makers is Olli Hess, whose mallets offer a beautiful range of possibilities.
Yes. Flumis are suitable for our gongs and can be used on both the front and the back. As with any playing tool, we recommend using an appropriate size and pressure for the instrument and the sound you're looking for.
It depends on how you intend to play and the kind of sound you're looking for.
The 50 cm Handheld Gong is a versatile, intimate instrument, ideal for sound bath sessions where you can walk around the room and play while holding the gong in your hands.
The 60 cm Gong is one of our personal favorites for its balance of depth, response, and versatility.
Our larger gongs offer a different experience, with a deeper presence and a sound that can fill a space. We absolutely love playing big gongs.
If you're unsure which one is right for you, read our guide on how to choose a gong, or feel free to get in touch. We'll be happy to help you find your instrument.
We recommend a soft microfiber cloth and 96% alcohol for cleaning. Avoid oils, waxes, and aggressive solvents, as these can leave residues or affect the surface.
Where possible, handle the instrument with clean hands and avoid unnecessary contact with the playing surface. Keep your gong away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and outdoor exposure to help preserve its finish over time.
We make four sizes: 50 cm (19.7 in, usually called a 20-inch gong), 60 cm (23.6 in, a 24-inch gong), 80 cm (31.5 in, a 32-inch gong) and 100 cm (39.4 in, a 40-inch gong). The size is the diameter of the gong.
