Strobe tuner for gongs, handpans and singing bowls
A strobe tuner for the fundamental of your instrument. While it rings, the sand draws the note.
How to use the tuner
- Press Start microphone and allow your browser to use it. A quiet room helps.
- Strike your gong, handpan note or singing bowl and let it ring.
- Read the note and its deviation in cents. The moving stripes show the fundamental: when they stand still, the note is in tune.
- Press Reference tone to hear the target note, and change A4 (400–480 Hz) if you tune to 432 Hz or another reference.
What the sand shows
While the instrument rings, the sand gathers into a figure, in the spirit of the Chladni patterns that appear on a vibrating plate. Every fundamental note draws its own figure, and the purer the tuning, the sharper the line. Press Save my figure to keep the image of your note, or share it.
Notes that pair with yours
Once a note is detected, the tuner suggests the notes that pair with it: an octave below to ground it, a fifth or a fourth below for an open, suspended feeling, a major third or a fifth above for warmth and brightness, an octave above for shimmer. It is a simple way to plan a set of gongs, or a gong that sits well with your handpan or bowls. To hear these notes, open the Sound Library.
Your privacy
The sound from your microphone is analysed inside your browser and never leaves your device. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.
A gong tuned to your note
Our 50 cm Handheld Gong can be tuned to any note from G2 to G3, and the 60 cm Core Gong from C2 to C3. Read how to choose a gong for help with the note.
